First Drafts
“The first draft is just me dumping all the puzzle pieces out.”
Second Drafts
“Do it again, but this time, take the ‘suck’ out of it.”
—Jessica Redish, the wonderful choreographer who managed to make me look like an almost-dancer in a former (theatrical) life.
Definitely keeping that first quote in mind (and the second, now that I think about it) is benefical for those of us who work without an outline. I frequently ask myself what the hell I’m doing as I hammer away at the keys with no idea if I’m creating something riveting or just stirring a pot of word soup.
Ah, the freedom and the folly of working without an outline. “Word soup” is a keeper, too.
Mostly folly, in my experience.
I like that first quote A LOT. 🙂
Me, too–that guy has a way of making you feel like he pulled the words right out of your head, but made them way more accurate, and way funnier.
